Višegodišnje iskustvo bavljenja otkupom zlata pokazuje da je u Hrvatskoj, pa i u Splitu sve više onih koji uviđaju vrijednost starog zlata. Starim zlatom nazivaju se već korišteni predmeti od zlata, odnosno „lom“ zlato. Primjerice, nakit koji je izišao iz zlatarnice gubi svoju vrijednost kao umjetnički, odnosno obrtnički artefakt. Ako zlatnu ogrlicu ili prsten ne nosimo, takvi predmeti na neki način postaju beskorisni. No, zlato u obliku već kupljenog i korištenog nakita ili drugih zlatnih predmeta s uporabnom ili estetskom svrhom vrijedi zbog materijala, odnosno sirovine od koje je taj predmet napravljen. S cijenom zlata raste i vrijednost predmeta napravljenih od ovog plemenitog metala. Mnogi ljudi tako ima nakit nemale vrijednosti koja je zapravo „zarobljena“, odnosno neiskorištena...
