Osim što je veliki pisac, Jonathan Franzen je i veliki ljubitelj ptica. To, međutim, ne znači da je duhovno blizak splitskim oželandurima. Dapače, kad bi čuo da na svijetu ima ljudi koji svekoliku populaciju ptica dijele u samo dvije kategorije, na pjevice i one koje to nisu, te da dotični ptičari uživaju u lovu, a potom i utamničenju muzikalne peradi, vjerojatno bi se onesvijestio od užasa. Dok naše entuzijaste zanimaju samo grdelini, vrduni, frzelini, lugarini i faganeli u ćibama, Franzen je potpuno neselektivan: što god slobodno leti, on bi htio za života vidjeti. I? I ništa. Sav smisao njegova bavljenja pticama iscrpljuje se u promatranju. Što će reći da mu smisao baš i nije neki, premda je, izvan svake sumnje, kudikamo plemenitiji od onoga kojim se rukovode naši oželandisti.

Dio te strasti veliki je pisac prelio između korica zbirke eseja pod naslovom "Kraj kraja zemlje" (prijevod potpisuje Igor Buljan). I to ne baš maleni dio. Zanimljivo je, međutim, da svoju zaokupljenost birdwatchingom (koja je tolika da je proputovao pola svijeta tražeći neke rijetke primjerke) nije čak ni pokušao objasniti čitateljima. Ako se mene pita, to je velika šteta, jer mi se čini da je svaka i svačija infišacija velika književna tema. Franzen se ovdje na krilima ptica dobacio do jedne druge velike problemske cjeline, ekologije, baveći se uglavnom pregrijanom retorikom proroka globalnog zagrijavanja. Iz ove opaske ne bi bilo umjesno izvoditi zaključak kako je i veliki pisac podlegao trabunjanjima novovjekih barbara (ravnozemljaša, antivaksera i sličnih) koji znanost doživljavaju kao spin zakuhan u tajnovitim centrima moći. Njega samo nervira prevladavajući aktivistički duh koji, dok naviješta neizbježnu ekološku apokalipsu, ignorira svakodnevne mogućnosti (i potrebe!) rješavanja samo naoko malih problema.

ODGODA SUDNJEGA DANA

"Možda je to zato što sam odgojen kao protestant i što sam postao ekološki aktivist, ali već sam dugo pod dojmom duhovne srodnosti između zaštite okoliša i novoengleskog puritanizma. Oba sustava vjerovanja opsjednuta su osjećajem da biti čovjek jednostavno znači biti kriv", veli na jednome mjestu Franzen, pa dodaje: "A sad su nam klimatske promjene dale eshatologiju za razračunavanje sa svojom krivnjom: uskoro, u pakleno pregrijanoj sutrašnjici, stiže sudnji dan. Ukoliko se ne pokajemo i popravimo svoje ponašanje, svi ćemo biti grešnici u rukama ljutite Zemlje." On se, međutim, ne želi prikloniti katastrofičarima, nego se zauzima za drukčiju metodu čije je izvorište pronašao na neočekivanom mjestu: "Kad sam počeo promatrati ptice, stao me privlačiti jednakovrijedni pravac kršćanstva nadahnut svetim Franjom Asiškim i njegovim primjerom ljubavi prema onome što je konkretno i ranjivo te pred nama."

No dva pogleda na isti paket problema ne moraju se nužno isključivati: "Smisao akcija povezanih s klimom, zbog toga što ne proizvode primjetan rezultat, nužno je eshatološki; odnose se na sudnji dan, za koji se nadamo da ćemo ga odgoditi. Smisao očuvanja u Amazoniji je franjevački: pomažete nečemu što volite, nečemu što je pred vama i možete vidjeti rezultate." Protestant Franzen izabrao je biti ekološkim franjevcem i moram priznati da je svoje razloge vrlo zavodljivo obrazložio.

PROMATRAČ PTICA I LJUDI

Premda bi naslov "Kraj kraja zemlje" mogao upućivati na zaključak kako se ovdje radi o libru koji je sav posvećen pretresu klimatskih kontroverzi, to ipak nije slučaj. Ekološke teme prevladavaju, ali nisu jedine kojima se autor bavi. Nezanemariv dio knjige tiče se i Franzenova core businessa, pisanja. Pritom on dijagnosticira zanimljiv fenomen dominacije ispovjednog diskursa koji je, čini se, iz dana u dan sve popularniji. Neki, dapače mnogi, čvrsto brane uvjerenje, veli Franzen "da su maštanje i izmišljanje zastarjeli postupci, da je uživljavanje u lik različit od autora čin prisvajanja, čak kolonijalizma, da je jedini autentični i politički obranjivi način pripovijedanja autobiografija." Na drugome mjestu, u rinfuznom eseju pod naslovom "Deset pravila za romanopisce", tvrdokornim zagovornicima memoaristike će se zgodno narugati: "Najčišća autobiografska fikcija zahtijeva čisto izmišljanje. Nitko nikad nije napisao priču koja je više autobiografska od ‘Preobražaja‘."

Kome je, dakle, do oštroumne esejistike koja ne barata općim mjestima, koja ne vrti stare, sto puta prežvakane teze, nego nudi svježe, iskošene, pa i odvažne iskorake u neugažene vode, ima se čemu veseliti. Hvala bogu, Franzen nije samo iskusni promatrač ptica, nego i ljudi.

Osim što je veliki pisac, Jonathan Franzen je i veliki ljubitelj ptica. To, međutim, ne znači da je duhovno blizak splitskim oželandurima. Dapače, kad bi čuo da na svijetu ima ljudi koji svekoliku populaciju ptica dijele u samo dvije kategorije, na pjevice i one koje to nisu, te da dotični ptičari uživaju u lovu, a potom i utamničenju muzikalne peradi, vjerojatno bi se onesvijestio od užasa. Dok naše entuzijaste zanimaju samo grdelini, vrduni, frzelini, lugarini i faganeli u ćibama, Franzen je potpuno neselektivan: što god slobodno leti, on bi htio za života vidjeti. I? I ništa. Sav smisao njegova bavljenja pticama iscrpljuje se u promatranju. Što će reći da mu smisao baš i nije neki, premda je, izvan svake sumnje, kudikamo plemenitiji od onoga kojim se rukovode naši oželandisti.

Dio te strasti veliki je pisac prelio između korica zbirke eseja pod naslovom "Kraj kraja zemlje" (prijevod potpisuje Igor Buljan). I to ne baš maleni dio. Zanimljivo je, međutim, da svoju zaokupljenost birdwatchingom (koja je tolika da je proputovao pola svijeta tražeći neke rijetke primjerke) nije čak ni pokušao objasniti čitateljima. Ako se mene pita, to je velika šteta, jer mi se čini da je svaka i svačija infišacija velika književna tema. Franzen se ovdje na krilima ptica dobacio do jedne druge velike problemske cjeline, ekologije, baveći se uglavnom pregrijanom retorikom proroka globalnog zagrijavanja. Iz ove opaske ne bi bilo umjesno izvoditi zaključak kako je i veliki pisac podlegao trabunjanjima novovjekih barbara (ravnozemljaša, antivaksera i sličnih) koji znanost doživljavaju kao spin zakuhan u tajnovitim centrima moći. Njega samo nervira prevladavajući aktivistički duh koji, dok naviješta neizbježnu ekološku apokalipsu, ignorira svakodnevne mogućnosti (i potrebe!) rješavanja samo naoko malih problema.

ODGODA SUDNJEGA DANA

"Možda je to zato što sam odgojen kao protestant i što sam postao ekološki aktivist, ali već sam dugo pod dojmom duhovne srodnosti između zaštite okoliša i novoengleskog puritanizma. Oba sustava vjerovanja opsjednuta su osjećajem da biti čovjek jednostavno znači biti kriv", veli na jednome mjestu Franzen, pa dodaje: "A sad su nam klimatske promjene dale eshatologiju za razračunavanje sa svojom krivnjom: uskoro, u pakleno pregrijanoj sutrašnjici, stiže sudnji dan. Ukoliko se ne pokajemo i popravimo svoje ponašanje, svi ćemo biti grešnici u rukama ljutite Zemlje." On se, međutim, ne želi prikloniti katastrofičarima, nego se zauzima za drukčiju metodu čije je izvorište pronašao na neočekivanom mjestu: "Kad sam počeo promatrati ptice, stao me privlačiti jednakovrijedni pravac kršćanstva nadahnut svetim Franjom Asiškim i njegovim primjerom ljubavi prema onome što je konkretno i ranjivo te pred nama."

No dva pogleda na isti paket problema ne moraju se nužno isključivati: "Smisao akcija povezanih s klimom, zbog toga što ne proizvode primjetan rezultat, nužno je eshatološki; odnose se na sudnji dan, za koji se nadamo da ćemo ga odgoditi. Smisao očuvanja u Amazoniji je franjevački: pomažete nečemu što volite, nečemu što je pred vama i možete vidjeti rezultate." Protestant Franzen izabrao je biti ekološkim franjevcem i moram priznati da je svoje razloge vrlo zavodljivo obrazložio.

PROMATRAČ PTICA I LJUDI

Premda bi naslov "Kraj kraja zemlje" mogao upućivati na zaključak kako se ovdje radi o libru koji je sav posvećen pretresu klimatskih kontroverzi, to ipak nije slučaj. Ekološke teme prevladavaju, ali nisu jedine kojima se autor bavi. Nezanemariv dio knjige tiče se i Franzenova core businessa, pisanja. Pritom on dijagnosticira zanimljiv fenomen dominacije ispovjednog diskursa koji je, čini se, iz dana u dan sve popularniji. Neki, dapače mnogi, čvrsto brane uvjerenje, veli Franzen "da su maštanje i izmišljanje zastarjeli postupci, da je uživljavanje u lik različit od autora čin prisvajanja, čak kolonijalizma, da je jedini autentični i politički obranjivi način pripovijedanja autobiografija." Na drugome mjestu, u rinfuznom eseju pod naslovom "Deset pravila za romanopisce", tvrdokornim zagovornicima memoaristike će se zgodno narugati: "Najčišća autobiografska fikcija zahtijeva čisto izmišljanje. Nitko nikad nije napisao priču koja je više autobiografska od ‘Preobražaja‘."

Kome je, dakle, do oštroumne esejistike koja ne barata općim mjestima, koja ne vrti stare, sto puta prežvakane teze, nego nudi svježe, iskošene, pa i odvažne iskorake u neugažene vode, ima se čemu veseliti. Hvala bogu, Franzen nije samo iskusni promatrač ptica, nego i ljudi.

Od protestanta do franjevca

Osim što je veliki pisac, Jonathan Franzen je i veliki ljubitelj ptica. To, međutim, ne znači da je duhovno blizak splitskim oželandurima. Dapače, kad bi čuo da na svijetu ima ljudi koji svekoliku populaciju ptica dijele u samo dvije kategorije, na pjevice i one koje to nisu, te da dotični ptičari uživaju u lovu, a potom i utamničenju muzikalne peradi, vjerojatno bi se onesvijestio od užasa. Dok naše entuzijaste zanimaju samo grdelini, vrduni, frzelini, lugarini i faganeli u ćibama, Franzen je potpuno neselektivan: što god slobodno leti, on bi htio za života vidjeti. I? I ništa. Sav smisao njegova bavljenja pticama iscrpljuje se u promatranju.
